Dry Brushing is a Hindu Ayurveda practice which is done to activate the body’s lymphatic system, improve skin health and improve fluid balance in the body. Cellular waste accumulates in the lymphatic system and dry brushing assists to improve circulation and therefore discharge these wastes from the body.
After cancer surgery, lymph nodes (glands) are often removed which can cause retention of lymph fluid. Dry brushing will help to reduce the risk of Lymphedema. Don’t use dry brushing on limbs with varicose veins but it is still safe to perform this action on the rest of your body. It is also not recommended to perform dry brushing on skin which is inflamed or affected by ailments such as psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis.
If you haven’t done dry skin brushing before, start with a medium brush, a firm brush should only be used by an experienced practitioner. Use on clean skin which is free from lotions or moisturiser and it is best done when you get out of bed in the morning, but can also improve the quality of sleep if done before bed.
