Moon Gardening Calendar

The Moon Planting Calendar, developed by Ray and Jean Scott, utilizes the gravitational pull of the Moon to guide gardening activities. It’s based on the principle that, just like the tides, plants with high water content are influenced by the Moon’s phases. This calendar provides guidance on the optimal times for planting, fertilizing, cultivating, and even fishing.

To use the Moon Calendar, follow these steps:

  1. Alignment: At the beginning of each month, align the New Moon symbol on the calendar with the corresponding date of the new moon for that month.
  2. Reference Moon Phases: Moon phases can be found in newspapers, diaries, or online resources. Alternatively, you can refer to specific Moon phases pages.
  3. Begin Planting: Once aligned, you’re ready to start planting according to the lunar cycles for the greatest success.

The calendar also includes “companion planting” tips for popular vegetables and fruits, which can further optimize your gardening efforts.

Ray and Jean Scott discovered the benefits of moon-based gardening over 35 years ago while growing vegetables commercially. They observed that seeds planted in certain moon phases grew faster and healthier compared to those planted in opposite phases. Plants planted in-phase showed higher resilience, crop yields, and germination rates, while those planted out of phase tended to go to seed prematurely.

The gravitational pull of the sun and moon during different moon phases influences the sap run in plants. This phenomenon, along with other natural forces, creates periods of high activity and rest for plants, which can affect their growth and development.
