What is Aqueous Coating?

Say goodbye to industrial composting and hello to your backyard bin — aqueous-coated packaging is changing the game. Originally developed for takeaway coffee cups, aqueous coating (or water-based dispersion coating) is now making its way onto a wider range of food packaging products, replacing traditional PLA linings for good reason.

This innovative technology creates a thin, water-based barrier that’s directly absorbed into paper fibres, forming a leak-resistant, heat-tolerant surface. The result? Packaging that stands up to hot drinks and messy meals — without needing a separate plastic or bioplastic layer. Better still, it uses significantly fewer synthetic polymers than PLA, making it a smarter, lower-impact choice.

But the real magic? Aqueous-coated cups and containers, when certified by a trusted third party, can be disposed of in your home compost — no industrial facility required. That’s right: your morning coffee cup can now break down alongside your veggie scraps.
Just keep in mind, not all aqueous coatings are created equal. Look for packaging that meets certified home compostable standards to avoid greenwashing and ensure you’re making the most sustainable choice.

Whether it’s your daily brew or your Friday night takeaway, aqueous coating is making packaging simpler, safer, and better for the planet.
