Why Does Dr Bronners Use Palm Oil?

Dr. Bronner’s Castile Bar Soaps use organic palm oil as a key ingredient, providing hardness and balancing the lathering power of coconut oil. Their palm oil comes from sustainably-harvested palm fruits in Ghana’s Eastern Region through Serendipalm, the company’s sister project. Serendipalm sources from 500 small, organic family farms that avoid clear-cutting rainforests, thus preserving local ecosystems.

The company ensures fair compensation for farmers and supports them with mulch and organic farming training, promoting both soil health and profitability. Serendipalm’s mill employs over 250 workers, mostly local women, who benefit from fair wages and good working conditions, rare in the region’s job market.

Serendipalm supplies Fair Trade organic palm oil not only to Dr. Bronner’s but also to several European Fair Trade companies. The Fair Trade premiums from each shipment fund community projects, including wells, water systems, public toilets, and school supplies. A committee with broad representation selects these projects, providing much-needed support to the local community.

Dr. Bronner’s believes that, despite the global surge in palm oil demand, small-scale, sustainable production can be both fair and profitable. This project showcases how ethical palm oil sourcing can benefit both people and the planet.
