Lye for Soap Making

Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is an essential building block in traditional soap making. This powerful, highly alkaline ingredient triggers the chemical reaction known as saponification, transforming oils and fats into rich, cleansing soap and glycerin.

Our lye is available in two convenient strengths to suit different soap-making needs. The 50% solution is ideal for crafting goat’s milk soaps, while the 33% solution is well suited for most other soap recipes. These options make lye an excellent starting point for beginners exploring the art of soap making. As your skills grow, you may wish to fine-tune your formulations by experimenting with custom lye calculations, as different oils and blends produce unique textures and qualities in the finished soap.

Because lye is a caustic material, it should always be handled with care using appropriate safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection. Rest assured, however, that during the soap-making process the lye is fully neutralized, leaving no harsh residue behind—only beautifully finished soap ready to use and enjoy.

Lye is only available for local delivery in Far North Queensland as it is considered to be dangerous goods and can’t be transported by Australia Post.
